The JCG (John Colahan Griffin) Nature Reserve covers 147 ha and protects remnant Ironbark, Long-leaved Box and Yellow Gum woodland which provides habitat for a variety of bushland birds that are declining across Victoria. Old growth trees provide nesting resources for birds such as parrots and owls, and for mammals such as Brush-tailed Phascogales. The endangered Swift Parrot is found in the area.
